Long distance relationships: feel close when you’re far apart

March 12, 2008 – 11:04 am

Does absence really make the heart fonder? Well, maybe a little bit of absence; but what if it is continuous?

Are people in long distance relationships among the most content and connected or does their time spent apart take a toll on the relationship?

Because the internet knows no borders, it’s quite possible that you may end up clicking with someone who lives quite far away.

That’s just the way it is when you’re looking for love online as opposed to in a local bar or club.

Statistically speaking, long distance relationships are among the hardest to maintain. There’s just too much that couples who rarely get to see each other miss out on.

Feelings of loneliness and frustration can turn into resentment if something is not done to keep the embers smoldering.

Fortunately, we live in the day and age where everything’s possible. The world is getting smaller, and you can hold a conversation with your love and gaze upon his or her face every minute of every hour of every day if you want to.

All you need is the right equipment and a few ideas to bring you closer. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Communication – Everyone knows that a close relationship requires open and frequent communication. Even if you are in different time zones you can communicate regularly without breaking the bank. Instant messaging, video conferencing, text messaging and phone calls are just a few of the ways to keep in touch. Be sure to schedule a mutually agreed upon time, or times, to talk everyday.
  • Mutual Activities – It’s very hard to make a connection with someone who is just a voice on the line. Reading the same book or watching the same movies can make you feel closer. When you do this, you can talk about it later and feel like you had a shared experience.
  • Share Connections – Be sure to become an active part in your love’s life. Talk to his or her friends and family. Doing so will help you feel closer and involved in your flame’s life.
  • Travel Frequently – You NEED to budget for traveling expenses and make frequent trips to see each other. Make it a priority. Having trouble getting time off work? Alternate trips. If you each get one vacation a year, take them at different times and travel to the other person’s home. This way you can see each other twice as often.
  • Save Money – There is no doubt that you will be able to do more if you save more. Save money by purchasing unlimited phone and messaging plans. If your partner lives in another country, look into a VOIP service. This service allows you to make international calls over internet lines for a lot less than you would spend using a domestic telephone line. Do you live just a few hours away? Many phone companies and cable companies offer unlimited long distance for as little as $29 a month.

The distance may be great, but you don’t have to feel miles apart.

There are several things that you can do to feel close to your love no matter how far away they may be at the moment.

Be innovative. Get Creative. After all, no doubt it was your imagination and spirit that attracted them to you in the first place.
